Seemingly random brown "rivers" appear all over Liberty Square. According to some sources, these pathways were meant to represent the sewage (yes, human sewage) that used to flow throughout the streets in Colonial America.
There are also no bathrooms in Liberty Square- You have to walk to Fantasyland or Adventureland to use the facilities- a fact that many people never notice (and never really need to- TMI, Disney!)
Still, it does seem to be the only plausible explanation for an otherwise brightly colored theme park to have that nasty brown sidewalk (which is pretty crudely shaped, I might add) with no other structure, rhyme or reason to it. (photo from a disney mom's thoughts)
