Disney fans all over the world are biting their nails with anticipation for when "Malificent", starring Angelina Jolie as the title character, hits movie theaters. Buzzfeed recently pointed out, however that "Sleeping Beauty is one epically messed up movie". And how very right they are. Don't remember it being so bad? well, as kids we just kind of glossed over many of the facts. such as:
- Aurora only has 18 lines in the film- even though the film is about her and her very life is in danger, she doesn't ever really have anything important to say
- she is taken away from her parents and raised as an orphan by three elderly women. She grows up thinking her parents are DEAD and then on her 16th birthday, finds out they have been alive this whole time and she could have been living with them? As a princess? in a castle? Still, she's not even MAD when they are finally reunited? WTF?
- the three fairies bestow gifts upon the princess when she's a baby and the first gift she's given is beauty. not, generosity, intelligence or even a superpower. Disney knows what's really important. This is a great example of positive female role models.
- the prince is put into an arranged marriage to the princess when she's still just a little baby! Then, Prince Phillip's father is super pushy about the two of them starting to make babies to be future heirs to the throne- But she's still oly turning 16!
- Everyone takes so much care to make sure that the princess will not be found in the woods, they burn all the spindles, etc but then they bring her back to the castle before the sun has set! The spell very clearly says she will be pricked before the sun sets on her 16th birthday. Why didn't they wait until nightfall?! THOSE FOOLS!
