Yes, EPCOT Center is an amazing theme park and has many visitors every year because of its technological and futuristic style, but was it meant to stay as it is right now? It seems that Walt Disney had completely different plans for it. The name EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, for it was Disney’s plan to create a utopian society in his lands in Florida. This society was supposed to be self-sufficient and capable of complete isolation from the rest of the world.
Once Walt Disney died, though, plans for the creation of this community were cancelled and the theme park was built instead, after the original city plans that had been described by Disney. The people mover ride, for example, was set to be the citizens’ form of transportation, and to make the streets a safer place, main vehicular roads would be moved underground. The World Showcase, as well, was in the original plans, meant to be a mall of sorts that promoted cultural diversity.
If Walt Disney had not been denied the funding for this project at first, how would it have changed the future? This concept of cities, if proved successful, could have spread throughout the US and the world. (most of my info came from the orlando vacation store blog that has a longer article about exactly what the plans were).
